Tiger Stadium Neighborhood Study (1989)

This study was executed by architecture students at the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning in 1989 in a studio taught by visiting professor Philip Bess. Following a figure-ground documentation of the Tiger Stadium neighborhood circa 1922 and its subsequent physical decline after the mid-1960s, students undertook the design of a reconstructed Tiger Stadium neighborhood that sought in part to demonstrate how a rehabilitated and preserved Tiger Stadium could be an important institutional presence in a revived neighborhood re-built to accommodate both a traditional mix of neighborhood uses and the pedestrian and automobile traffic generated by Tiger Stadium. A particularly interesting aspect of their design was a proposal to accommodate stadium generated parking in new "parking greens" and on new boulevards designed in the generous ROWs of existing major neighborhood streets.
